In the year that the Oxford English Dictionary was first issued and women over 21 won the right to vote, Ronald Mann (Ro-Man) started his family print business in Southbourne, Bournemouth after moving out of his garden shed. The year was 1928. During the next 70 years the company grew into one of Bournemouths leading suppliers of print and office supplies. The name and familiar Roman Centurion Head has remained with the company throughout the years, testament to the strength of the original design. In 1996 the current owners, Ray Ashby, Tony Baker and Doug Saunders acquired the company by way of a management buy out. Since then the two main divisions of the company, Roman Press and Roman Office Supplies, have been amalgamated under the banner the roman group - a multi-million pound business employing over 40 staff at Head Office in Bournemouth, just a short distance from the site of Ronald Manns original premises. the roman group has added to this during 2001 with the opening of an additional branch in Hastings.
